Why A Blog

The first thing you should decide is why you want to start a blog? Is it to make money? Is it to keep an online diary of sorts, or possibly an online portfolio?

My son keeps a blog about the things he is learning in our homeschool so when he goes to college, he’ll have a terrific resume – and experience with blogs and computers!

There are many types of blogs – political, fashion, DIY, life skills, etc.… You can literally find a blog about ANYTHING!

So, why you do want to start a blog? The answer to this question will help you decide on a number factors, from how much time you want to devote to you blog, how you will market your work, and if you want to keep a free blog or pay for your own domain.

Finding a Host Site

There are many FREE site host options when it comes to starting a blog. Each has its own pros and cons along with the complexity of the site builder.

Some of the most popular Free Host Sites Include:

However, if you choose to use a Free Blog site builder, then you will NOT be able to have your own domain.

Hosting Sites V.S. Domain Registration

There is some confusion about a web host verses domain registration. Your web host is the site that you will choose to host your blog on. If this is a FREE web host (Wix, Weebly, WordPress), then your domain will most likely include a (your site name), or (your site name), or (your site name)

If you choose to register your domain, you buy the right to use your website as an easily recognizable “.com” name. For example,

The cost to buy a domain is fairly cheap – under $20/year.

If you have your own domain, then you will need to find a web host for your domain and most free sites won’t host a domain name. This means you will have to pay for a web host service.

Bluehost offers one of the cheapest domain hosts – you can start with under $4/month.

Wealthy Affiliate is a web host service (along with many more features) that will host your WordPress blog as a for FREE. AND if you choose to host your site in their free feature, you can still use their program as an affiliate (a way to make some money on the side).

    Hi Kayla,

    Thanks for the article.

To answer your question at the end of the blog post, I started a blog because I wanted to provide useful information to people and in the process, earn money from it. The other reason is that it is a way for me to develop a new set of skills. Starting a blog may not be that complicated but learning and practising to write quality content is a skill and art to learn.

That’s exactly why I started a blog too – to help others and earn a side income! It’s important to never stop learning and always refine and develop new skills! It does take time and commitment, but I’ve found it to be very rewarding and enjoyable (you just have to keep pushing through the hurdles!)

What niche are you involved in?

Thanks for your feedback and comment. I appreciate you!

      Best of luck!

Hi, thanks for your post. However, I don’t think Bluehost is the best recommendation. Just read this review I don’t like Bluehost because it does not offer unlimited storage unless those files are being used by your web site. What do you think?

    • Kayla says:

      Hey Sabrina,
Thanks so much for your comment. I appreciate your opinion your opinion and I did read the review you sent me. I think in the beginning of 2017, initially they did lose a lot of clients. I would say this is perhaps the competition is becoming more fierce, but the they have seen tremendous growth again and while they aren’t back on top – they’re slowly making their way there.
As for storage, unforuntley most websites end up going belly up within the first 6 months, so offering unlimited storage at their price seems giving away more than necessary. However, if you ever needed more storage, you could switch domain hosts with very little issues.
To be honest, I still recommend Wealthy Affiliate as my #1 web hosting site. Yes, it’s more expensive than most, but you receive ongoing trainings and will continue to learn how to build your business. They even make all the changes necessary for you when internet standards change.
I still think Bluehost is a good option for a cheap service – but you do get what you pay for.
Hope that helped! I appreciate you stopping by!
